OBAMA ADDRESSES RACE IN AMERICA

Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama rose to the occasion on Tuesday when he addressed allegations of racism against his pastor, Revered Jeremiah Wright, and announced his position on the state of race relations in America.

Among other things, Wright had stated that America brought the 9/11 attacks on itself with its foreign policy. After noting that Wright’s views were “profoundly distorted," and denounced them as “completely inexcusable” he also noted that he could not abandon his pastor just as he could not abandon black America.

Barack Obama came in first among the Democratic presidential candidates in yesterday’s Iowa caucus. The charismatic former Illinois senator beat out John Edwards and Hillary Clinton for the top spot.

Obama’s lead was nothing short of impressive. Obama took nearly 38 percent of the vote followed by Edwards with just shy of 30 percent. Hillary came in third with less than a full percentage point difference from Edwards. This is a setback for Hillary, who is regularly placed in the Democratic top spot in national polls.

President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Shotgun Cheney claimed no knowledge of having destroyed CIA interrogation tapes, according to a White House spokesperson.

The tapes, made in 2002, supposedly contained new ‘alternative’ interrogation methods used on suspected al-Qaeda terrorists. The tapes were destroyed in 2005 when the CIA determined that they no longer held importance for intelligence purposes but could constitute a security risk.

Talk show host and all around class act Oprah Winfrey once again lent her support to Barrack Obama as the Democratic presidential hopeful campaigned in Iowa this week.

In a recent rally held at Iowa’s state capital in Des Moines a crowd of over 18,000 people showed up to support Obama in his bid for the number one spot on the January 3rd state primary vote. And while other candidates, both Republican and Democrat, have been campaigning hard the past few weeks in the important state, the Obama-Oprah rally has drawn the largest crowd so far.

Just two days after a US intelligence assessment stated that Iran had abandoned its quest for nuclear weapons in 2003, President Bush again threatens another disastrous war in the Middle East.

“The Iranians have a strategic choice to make,” Bush said Wednesday. “They can come clean with the international community about the scope of their nuclear activities, and fully accept the longstanding offer to suspend their enrichment program and come to the table and negotiate. Or they can continue on a path of isolation that is not in the best interest of the Iranian people.”

According to Reuters, former Bush Press Secretary Scott McClellan stated on Tuesday that President Bush was “involved” in disseminating inaccurate information regarding the leak of CIA officer Valerie Plame’s identity. The fiasco resulted in the trial, conviction, and pardon of Cheney crony Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby.

McCellan served as the White House Press Secretary from 2003 to 2006. His comments regarding Bush’s alleged behavior come from his forthcoming memoir, due out in April. The White House continues to deny that Bush had anything to do with leak.
